Denver Broncos vs Atlanta Falcons Recap and Drive Stats

Another week, another fairly slow start for the Broncos offense.  This week though, the defense being down AJ Bouye and Bryce Callhan just could not get enough stops early to keep the game within reach.

The first half this week continued the long nightmare, as the Broncos offense gained 50% or more of their potential yards on just one drive, with the last two going three and out and punting back to the Falcons after they had just gone up 20-3.  The defense couldnt help get themselves off the field either, as Davonte Harris was repeatedly targeted and beat by the Falcons receivers.  Being down two corners in the modern NFL is going to hurt a lot, especially when the next two on the depth chart are both rookies.

The second half was not much better through the third quarter, but the defense did stiffen up, forcing the Falcons to a turnover and just one drive over 50%, although it did end in a touchdown.  The 4th saw the offense finally come alive, with just two drives failing to gain 50% (Drew Lock's ill advised throw of the day getting picked off).  That quarter is what you want from the offense, as Jerry Jeudy had several great catches and a spectacular fake hand up go route that helped generate separation for a touchdown.

Overall this offense is still a huge work in progress.  Drew Lock has yet to demonstrate he should be the guy going forward, as we see flashes of brilliance with just wholesale what is going on moments.  Pat Shurmur has also I think failed to really capitalize on the most consistent part of it, Phillip Lindsay.  This week the run game struggled, but 14 carries al game is not going to get it done for a young QB who is struggling with the scheme.  The defense continues to be solid but injuries have decimated its capabilities.  It continues to be waiting game for this team to put together an all around performance, but with it being Raiders week upcoming there's no better time.
