Denver Broncos Potential Yards 2018

Back again for 2018 is the Denver Broncos Potential Yards.  I'll update this every week and every few weeks I'll look at how things overall are going.

CLE: Turnovers on offense and three other drives that resulted in no field position change essentially doomed the Broncos.  A penalty laden drive by the Browns to start the Third quarter limited Denver's possessions, gaining only 4 possessions in the second half to 6 non kneel down possessions in the first.  The Browns last two drives were daggers, and the defense looked all the part of a paper tiger.

SF:  The offensive issues and injuries of this season bit Denver hard on Sunday.  The first half saw no drives hit 50% of potential yards, and four of the six first half drives failed to gain 25% of needed yardage.  The defense tightened up in the second half to slow things down, but couldn't stop the Niners from flipping the field on their last drive, smothering any chance of a comeback.  Its tough to lose a game like this to a team that has been so bad this year, and to look so incompetent doing it.

CIN:  The Defense showed up today and its a good thing.  The offense looked much better in the second half, but the first half felt all too much like previous weeks where there just was no rhythm to the passing game.  I also love that the Bengals had a drive that gained -35% of their potential yardage.

PIT: A great victory that I got to be in the stands for.  Always helps when you can generate four turnovers, especially as the defense gave up more than 50% of yards on all four first half drives.  The offense had only four drives itself of over 50%, but put it into the endzone on three of them.

 LAC: It felt good to get a win again.  The offense still struggled, but was able to on half its drives flip the field position over.  The defense surrendered a lot of potential yards, but allowed just a pair of touchdowns on the day to keep the game within reach.

HOU:  This game was just sort of a mess.  The offense squandered drives early, and then couldn't get any closer than 62% of yards for the last field goal attempt despite having plenty of time to go get a few more yards.  The defense was open early but clamped down later, but just a little too late.

KC: Just not enough from the offense for most of the game with omly 5 drives going to 50% of their yards.  The defense held pretty well but giving up 4 Touchdowns is never going to make things easy.

Arizona: This was a murder really.  The offense overall was efficient enough, but the defense contributing two pick 6s sealed the game before it was even really a contest.

LAR:  The offense started far too slowly this week again.  Denver needed to flip field position after starting the first 7 drives inside their own 30, and they did a fair job at that to help keep the Rams in long drives all game.  The defense struggled all day against the run, but once they settled down they were able to limit the Rams to just 23 points on the day.

 Jets: The offense was miserable this week.  After the short touchdown drives the offense had two drives go over 30% of potential yards until a deep drive in the 4th quarter.  The only had three drives go over 50% in the first 10 possessions, including a drive that was 20 yards.  Just pitiful  The defense wasn't much better, allowing big play after big play and 7 drives to go over 50%, five of which were over 80%.  Those were all long drives as well, which is a back breaker.

KC: Absolute heartbreaking way to lose this game.  The defense had done a great job throughout the game limiting the Chiefs, but the last two scoring drives were too much, with too many easy yards surrendered.  The offense overall moved the ball with pretty much ease, but the second to last drive where they ended up gaining 0 yards thanks to a stuff, a swing pass loss and a scramble for 0 hurt any chance to hold the game.

BAL: What started out as such a promising day quickly turned sour for the Broncos.  The offense looked woefully inept, going  seven straight drives without being able to gain 50% of potential yards.  That just cannot happen.  The defense was much better at limiting the Ravens chances to flip field position, with five of their eight long drives failing to gain 25% of their yardage.  The defense though needed to be better at stopping some of those short drives, because the special teams (especially Marquette King) had a rough day on kickoffs and punts.

OAK:  The Broncos first half might have been some of the most inept offensive football we've seen in awhile. 4 of six drives gained under 15% of their total yards, and the one that looked promising ended with a terribly thrown interception.  Then the second half came and the offense picked up 72% on all their drives at least.  Next week against the Ravens hopefully there is some more consistency.  The defense struggled a bit, as half the Raiders drives gained more than 50% of potential yards.  There were a lot of easy yards given up by the defensive backs.

SEA: The offense had its fits.  Denver had 10 drives that started inside their 30, with 4 of them gaining at least 50% of their yards.  I'll be much more interested after this next week to see, especially as long as Case doesnt throw 3 picks again.  The Defense also had some bad spurts, mostly with a couple big plays surrendered to a low ranked TE.  They also had 9 drives where the Seahawks didnt gain 15% of their potential yards so it was mostly a good day.
