Super Bowl Prediction 2019-2020 Season

The last week of the NFL is finally upon us.  We get a treat as two of the top offenses in the league this year square off, as Patrick Mahomes leads the Chiefs against Jimmy G and the Niners.

The Chiefs ranked 3rd overall in offensive DVOA this year, thanks to a 2nd ranked passing DVOA of 43.7%.  This is largely thanks to the magic of Mahomes, who had himself another excellent season in his second year starting.  Mahomes didn't do quite as well as he had last season while dealing with injuries, but he still completed 65% of his passes and threw only 5 Ints.  Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman combined to provide a big play element for the Chiefs, averaging 14.8 and 20.1 yards per catch respectively.  The team was highly efficient as well, averaging 6.2 plays per drive and 37.2 yards.   This efficiency was largely driven by the effectiveness of Travis Kelce, who lead the league in Effective Yards for a TE, and he would have ranked 7th for WRs as well.  That will be tested against a 49ers defense that allowed just 552 yards all season against opposing TEs.  It will also be key to see if the 49ers can keep up the immense pass rush they've been able to generate, with a 9.1% adjusted sack rate.

The Niners offense is truly predicated on being able to run the ball effectively.  Despite ranking just 13th in rushing DVOA, the Niners ranked 2nd in yards and 1st in rushing TDs.  The three headed rushing attack of Mosert, COleman and Brieda has given teams toruble all season.  This rushing attack has also helped to make sure not to put too much stress on Garoppolo as the 49ers ranked 29th in passing attempts.  Jimmy though responded when called upon, completing almost 70% of his passes for 7..4 Net Yards per attempt, best fro 3rd in the league.  The Chiefs defense has not held up against the run over the season, as they allowed 4.82 Adjusted line yards per rush.  However, the Chiefs held down Derrick Henry in the title game, allowing just 69 yards on the ground to the bruising back.  The pass defense has also been very good all year, ranking 8th in yards surrendered and generating turnovers on almost 14% of opponent's drives.

Overall, this game is a toss up.  The Chief's offense poses huge matchup problems all across the field.  Can Richard Sherman and Jimmy Ward matchup with Hill, Kelce and Hardman?  Can Patrick Mahomes stay upright as he has this season against the ferocious 49ers front?  The Niners rushing attack will pressure the Chiefs as well. If the Niners front seven can force a few stops, I think the Niners can walk away the winners.  If not, I think the Chiefs will be able to force Jimmy G into some bad turnovers trying to press the attack.

NFL Conference Championship Prediction 2020

This weekend we move one step closer to the Super Bowl.  Despite getting a pair matchups that are rematches, both games have teams that few people would have guessed to be here before the season.  The Niners and Titans both have capped seasons that they defied expectations.  The Niners having done so all season, ranking near the top of the program's power rankings from the jump.  The Titans took a bit longer to et going, with the switch to Ryan Tannehill after the their loss to the Broncos.  The Packers, while not being a huge surprise, still were a bit unlikely.  A new head coach and preseason reports of friction with Aaron Rodgers had some thinking they might end up nearer the bottom of the NFC North.  But a Bears collapse and a surprisingly good defense have propelled them back to the title game.  The only team that most prognosticators had here was the Chiefs, and even they had rough patches this season, at the midway point sitting at 5-3.

The program has both home teams wining handily, but it might not be so simple.  The Chiefs are facing one of the hottest teams in the league, and one that beat them earlier this year.  The Titans were out gained in that matchup 530 yards to 371 yards, but Derrick Henry was able to thrash the 29th DVOA rushing defense for 188 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  The Titans for their part will have to control the lines of scrimmage like they did against Baltimore last weekend, because their pass defense has not been good enough (21st by DVOA), despite facing the 6th most pass attempts and allowing 9th best Passing Yards per game.  However, the Chiefs still possess the most explosive offense in the league, so the Titans are going to have to score.  And they just havent been consistent enough on that end to show they have a real shot to win.

The Niners have one of the most balanced teams in the league this year, with a defense that ranks 2nd in DVOA and and offense that ranks 7th.  It was on display in the last meeting, where the Niners embarrassed the Packers 37-8.  The Packers lost that game while gaining fewer than 200 yards. It doesn't look like they should have a chance in the rematch either, with a defense that teams were able to run on,allowing almsot 5 yards per carry.  The offense will have to shoulder most of the load here, and hopefully keep Rodgers more upright than the last meeting, where he was sacked 5 times.

NFL Divisional Round Predictions 2019

The program had picked all the home teams to win last week, and only the Houston Texans were able to pull it out.  And even that was in doubt for the whole first half.  So what happened?  I had stated I thought the Pats and Eagles were in some real trouble, thanks to a just bland offense and injuries respectively.  The Pats was just about how I had laid it out, but the Eagles might have been very different if not for an in game injury to Carson Wentz.  The Saints just looked befuddled, especially with their own injuries on defense and the return of Adam Thielen to full strength.

Onto this week, its another home favorites week.  I think the Packers are the weakest of the home teams, so they might have some issues because Seattle still has one of the best offenses in the league with Wilson.  The Chiefs might also be in a  little bit of trouble if the Titans can dictate the pace of the game and limit possessions with Henry against that 29th DVOA rushing defense, but they should score enough points to win.  The Niners defense dipped at the end of the year, but this is an offense they have a blueprint for (its their own) and Kwon Alexander looking healthier after an off week should give them a boost to get past.

NFL Wild Card Weekend Predictions 2019

The first round of the playoffs is here.  All the division winners are favored this week, although the matchups should all be tough.  Honestly, the Patriots and Eagles are in the most danger I believe.  The Patriots face a tough team in the Titans that have been much more up since the QB change, and New England from November onwards is a .500 team.  Not counting them out, especially with one of the better defenses in the league (just 22 yards per drive allowed), but if there was a time for them to be in trouble it might be this season.  The Eagles on the othe rhand are in danger thanks to a depleted receiving corps now also might be dealing with a slowed Ertz, who might have lacerated a kidney in Sunday;s win over the Giants.  All season the Eagles have had a higher variability due to injury, and that will likely stay the same this week.

The Saints looked like they were in late season form this week against Carolina, and should be able to get past the Vikings in what could be a shoot out as both defenses rank in the bottom half for yards allowed per drive, and scoring drive percentage.  The Texans and Bills will be an intriguing game, which Houston should be able to win thanks to taking a week to get healthy for a lot of layers.

NFL Predictions Week 17 2019

The final week of the regular season is upon us.  While some folks will say a large chunk of this week;s slate doesn't matter, it very much does for a good chunk of these players and fans attending the games.

NFL Predictions Week 16 2019

THis week continues to be an important one for seeding, and for tigh divisional races as well.  The 49ers must win this week to keep pace with Seattle prior to a pivotal week 17 showdown, while the Cowboys need a win otherwise they're out of the playoffs.  The Pats need a win this week to avoid potentially losing the AFC East crown for the first time since 2008.

NFL Predictions Week 15 2019

Not a lot of close matchups this week.  The Cowboys have a must win game against a Rams team that is finding a stride.  The Lions have to get a game against the Bucs if they want to salvage this season as well.
